A Brief History Of Canadian Cannabis
When you think of Canada, most people think igloos, moose, maple syrup, hockey, and specifically BC bud. Yes you read that right! Canadians are known worldwide for their cannabis.
How did this come to be? How did we become so rich in cannabis growing and consuming? We are the second country to legalize recreational use. At one point, cannabis was illegal in Canada. From 1923 til July 2001 cannabis was regulated for medical purposes.
Did you know the first crop of hemp cannabis was grown in Nova Scotia? An Apothecary who accompanied Samuel De Champlain grew the first crop! From 1801 to 1917 Hemp farms were common in Canada. As a result a new machine was even invented to separate the fibers from the internal core. However later on cotton overtook the hemp market since it was less labor intensive to harvest.
How Did Canadian Cannabis Become Illegal?
To begin with, it all goes back to the 1908 opium act, prohibiting all drug use. For instance, you remember the opium dens and people strung out on shit and laying in bed for days wasting away? Yeah, Canada banned that sh*t. However, they unfortunately lumped cannabis into that as well in 1923 after reefer madness swept North America.
A publication as released in 1922 called “The Black candle by Emily F Murphy” states that marijuana turns it users into Homicidal maniacs. Surprisingly, there was no actual reason ever given as to why cannabis was outlawed in Parliament. However that’s my speculation. I’ve never been homicidal. Maniac is questionable BUT it’s not because I use cannabis. Afterward Cannabis regained popularity in the 1960’s because of the hippie moment.
Canadian Cannabis Legalization
Marijuana first became legal for medical use and managed by health Canada in July 2001. Over the years decriminalizing cannabis and marking harsher laws pertaining to cannabis was brought to the table in parliament and the senate many times. In spite of that, nothing came of it. As a result, the black market thrived.
The tables were turned in 2015 when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was elected. His election platform was largely based on legalizing cannabis for recreational use. As a result of that he captured the hearts of many dedicated weed lovers across our nation.
Prime Minister JT wasn’t kidding and The Cannabis Act came to life legally on October 17, 2018. Making us only the SECOND country to legalize recreational cannabis use. And also the only G7 & G20 nation to have legal recreational cannabis use .

You cannot travel with cannabis outside of Canada legally . However you can travel with cannabis within Canada! As a result airports even have designated cannabis smoking areas now.

CBD Is Nonpsychoactive
Not all forms of weed are legal in Canada yet. Extracts, edibles, and vape pens will be legal later this year .
Every Canadian province has different laws pertaining to cannabis. Some provinces such as Manitoba and Quebec don’t allow you to grow recreationally.
