Where does 420 come from?

Depending on where you live or who you ask you might get a different answer, but this is what we found out about 420. Starting somewhere in San Rafael, California, in the late 70’s it began as  police codes referring to ‘Marijuana Smoking in Progress’. Once locals started to hear police refer to this they (locals) would begin using this expression to refer to herb (weed).

An example being “Let’s go 420 dude!” This has been debunked and proven false by the Huff Post as they have claimed that it actually originated from a group of High school friends known as  “The Waldos”. The Huffington Post later spoke with The Waldos and this group of friends could’ve never imagined having a worldwide holiday celebrated on April 20th.  The Waldos story that began the 420 movement started with meeting up after class and smoking pot at 4:20 by the campus’ statue of chemist Louis Pasteur. They chose this time because it was usually after their extracurriculars were finished. These friends would use 420 as a code for marijuana. Little did they know, their term 420 would eventually reach the band “The Grateful Dead” and The High Times Magazine.

Those influencers together helped spread the term “420” to become what it is today.  As of Christmas week in Oakland, 1990, Steven Bloom was in “The Lot” which is a gathering for hippies before every Grateful Dead concert. When a yellow flyer was handed to Mr. Bloom it read “ We are going to meet at 4:20 on 4/20 for 420-ing in Marin County at the Bolinas Ridge sunset spot on Mt. Tamalpais” Bloom then forwarded this message to the Huffington Post.

In 2003, the California legislature codified the medical marijuana law voters had approved, the bill was named SB420.  As for Canada, on October 17th 2018, the provinces would legalize recreational use of marijuana and allow citizens to carry under 30 grams.
